You don't need to make Nick your companion, just talk to him. I mean, enter dialogue with him and select the "talk" option on the top. For that you will have to hit the fusion cell that is in the armor (VATS can let u specifically target this). this will cause a delayed explosion and forces the enemy to get out of the armor.
